How to Choose Your Engagement Photos

Summary: Engagement photos should celebrate the momentous occasion in your relationship. The key to great engagement photos is to capture you and your finance in everyday life.

Engagement photos are the first chapter of your lives together. They should capture the natural love you share and show how comfortable you are with each other. Selecting the right photos will set the stage for building an engagement photo album to persevere the memories leading up to the wedding.

It is not necessary to hire a professional photographer to take the engagement photo; however, it could be an excellent opportunity to work with a photographer prior to the wedding. If you have a good quality camera it is perfectly acceptable to do your own.

Composition is the most important element in capturing the moment. Keep in mind the goal of the photos is to show the two of you in an every day setting. Here are a few tips to consider:

  • Location. Select a location that is a favorite spot. Perhaps there is a park or restaurant that holds special memories. Some couples opt to use the location of the proposal.
  • Dress. Wear complementary clothing. Choose something comfortable that you can sit, stand or walk in. if you have chosen an outdoor location wear shoes that allow for light hiking. Wear presentable shoes and socks that may be captured in the shot.
  • Colors. Choose earth tones like green, brown or blues. Solid colors are preferable to prints. Avoid anything with a large pattern or logo. Keep in mind darker colors will minimize size while lighter colors will maximize body size.
  • Matching. The goal is not to make you match and look like twins, but it is important for you to blend and look harmonious together.
  • Hair and Makeup. Use the engagement photo as a chance to preview how your hair and makeup will look on your wedding day. If you are planning to use a professional make up service, have them do your hair and make up before the engagement photo shoot. Avoid glossy makeup as it catches the flash and can ruin the shot. Matte finishes are preferable for creating a good photograph. Keep make up fresh and light. Dark eye liner will minimize the size of your eyes.
  • Jewelry. Keep it simple. Avoid anything big and lavish. The focus should be on you, the couple, and your love for each other.
  • Glasses. If you have contacts wear them. Glasses can pick up unwanted glare or reflections. If you do not wear contacts or wish to wear your glasses; compensate for lighting by trying different positions or angles.
  • Props. Small props like sunglasses that are fitting to the location can add flair and personality to the shot. Keep in mind, props should enhance the photo not distract from the subject.

It is not uncommon to take several shots at more than one location. Select the shot that best represents your personality and captures the sparkle in your eye. It should be casual and represent who you are as a couple. Relax and have fun.
